The Irons Family

Family Photography, C j Duncan Photography

As the parents of a little one, we know that one day we will have to let go.  Mom and Dad Irons thought they had done that when their little girl got married and moved to the “Big City.”  However, the big move to the metroplex was nothing compared to her next great adventure…Indonesia.

So, when faced with your daughter moving half way across the world, what do you do–you have a new family portrait created.

This family is fun.  Brian, as a former photographer himself, had many ideas.  Jane, as a mom, had ideas too.  Then you add in Cris (with his ideas for family photography) and me (reflector girl who always has ideas about family portrait) and you have one wild time.  We all laughed (and ribbed Cris) and created some new memories.

Thank you Jane and Brian for entrusting your family memories to C j Duncan Photography.  We are honored.  (And one day, when our daughter announces she is going to be a missionary or entrepreneur half way across the world, we will be calling you for advice.)

Blessings!

Sarah–Cooper High School Senior

Senior Photography by C j Duncan Photography

An easy smile, a fierce Volleyball player, and (we are pretty sure) a loyal friend.

You might find her doodling on some paper–taking words and phrases and creating a piece of heart-felt art.  You might find her sharing a quiet moment with her mom.  You might find her giving no mercy on the court.  However, what we know for sure is that we are glad that we found her.  :)

There are so many stories to tell…When Sarah (or actually her mom) approached us about documenting her senior year, we were excited.  We love seniors.  They are open to anything.  We talked about roller skating and tons of other things that define Sarah.  She just did not want her senior photography to look like everyone else’s.  (That makes us happy.)  We wanted her senior photography session to define her–to be her–to tell her story.  And so it is–from refined to undefined, this is Sarah.

To view her full session, click here.

Now, we love to hear the raves and grats during the portrait premier event.  However, Sarah paid us the highest compliment when she asked if we could help her with her Senior Project.  So, you may be seeing a bit more of her throughout the year as the interns a bit.  In fact, we were so excited, that we gave her a little bonus to give to her friends.  If you know Sarah, ask her for more info.

Thanks again Sarah.  We are excited about seeing you more throughout this year.

I want you to want me…Humane Society

Adopt me from the Humane Society

Several weeks ago we were contacted with a request.  The International Cultural Center at Texas Tech is gifting the Human Society of West Texas with a fundraising gala.  They asked us at C j Duncan Photography to photograph a few of their four legged friends so they could be on display for the event.  The whole idea is that when you see the doggie, you will fall in love and just HAVE to take him/her home.

Now, photographing 6 dogs at once is always an adventure.  If you ever want to have a fun time, just hire Cris to photograph your dog.  You will roll on the floor as you see what we go through to get your puppy with perked ears.  Anyway, we loved these dogs.  I really wanted to keep a few.  If you have visited the studio recently you will agree, we have enough space for a few more.  However, Cris seems to think that a new teenager is enough for right now.  Perhaps, but if you want to bring your little (or big one) over, we would love to spoil them.

Now, if you don’t have one to spoil, or you know you have a little more room in your heart to spoil another one, please contact the Humane Society of West Texas at 806.3799.7387 or email them at HSWT.org@gmail.com.  You can also attend their fundraiser tomorrow night (Friday Aug 27th) from 5:00-7:00 at the International Cultural Center.  There is no charge for admission.  They have tons of silent auction items (including a C j Duncan mustard seed print), great goodies to eat and a cash bar.  Plus, you can help save a dog or cat.

Now, why did we agree to help…  Have you met our sweet dog Buddy?  He is a rescue dog and has blessed us beyond measure.  There is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog. Now, even though Buddy has his quirks (like trying to spoon you in the middle of the night) we would not trade anything for our sweet Canadian Golden Retriever.  He was found abandoned in a field.  When the animal services contacted his vet, the owners said they didn’t want him.  We truly can’t imagine why.  When we met him he was covered in ticks, hair mats and his bones protruded.  However, we knew that with love, everything blossoms and so we chose him.  We thought we were “rescuing” him.  We never realized that he would be the one who would really bless us.  He loves us unconditionally.  He craves to be by our side.  Besides God, he truly is man’s best friend.

If you want your own Buddy story, I urge you to contact the Humane Society.  You never know how it may change your life…

A new class begins

Lubbock Senior Photographer

Stephanie rocks.

Her boots kick.

Her personality shines.

Can we think of any more adjectives?

Continuing with the cliches, Stephanie moved to the front of the class when chose to do her senior portaits at the beginning of the year (you know, when it is still green, you have a tan and we don’t have the 60mph spring winds).  A Plains High School senior, she fills her schedule with basketball, academics and modeling.  If she is anything like her brother, her letter jacket will be filled when we have her complimentary spring mini session (our gift to all Fall Senior Style Session Seniors).

One of the highlights of the session was when she slipped on some $700 shoes.  (Cris has some he was shooting for Ann Lilli’s shoes and they looked righteous on Stephanie.  Her mom agreed until she saw the price tag…)  Refocusing, Stephanie had an easy laugh, a truly kind and gracious spirit and a smile that brightens your day.  Thank you for choosing C j Duncan Photography for your senior memories.

A Growing Family

Carpenter Series gift print by C j Duncan Photography

Today a mother is kissing her 16 year old daughter.  She will give her a hug, smile and place her on a plane to fly halfway across the world.

She won’t see her again for the next ten months.

She can only talk to her daughter for about 30 min–every other week.

She has never met the people who will be caring for her daughter.  She has never seen where her daughter will live.  She knows nothing and yet is willing to give everything.

Why?

Supreme Love

Her sacrifice will give her daughter an advantage beyond measure–a chance to live in the “Land of Opportunity.”

An opportunity to live with us.

Let me turn back the clock a week.

Cris and I are driving home from shooting a wedding in Midland.  As we drive, we talk about this coming school year–our hopes and dreams for our family, our daughter and our business.

You see, we never really planned on being a family of three.  Coming from big families, we always thought there would be more.  Somehow, three never seemed complete.  A part of me always believed that when the time was right, God would bring our next child to us.

As we walked in the door, Cris’ phone rang.  People were coming over for Life Group in a matter of minutes, and as I shot him the, “why are you answering the phone, there are people coming over and stuff to do look,” he slipped out onto the back porch.

A bit later, he came back.

“That was a call from some lady.  She wants us to participate in some government program and let a teenager from Serbia who is interested in photography come and live with us for the next 10 months.”

Later we discovered she was literally calling photographers down the phone book.

It was an emergency placement and we had less than 24 hours to decide.

“I really feel the Lord is telling us to let Nina come a live with us,” our 10 year old stated after praying for all of 1 second.  (The reality of sharing a bathroom hasn’t set in yet.)

After praying (for longer that 1 second), we concurred.

An almost paralyzing fear hit me:

We are being entrusted with someone that does not belong to us.

Then, the Lord spoke a quiet word–you already are entrusted with someone who does not belong to you, for you are mine.

He has acted in Supreme Love.

Rom 8:16 states, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

Then, according to 2 Tim 1:14, as God’s children, a good deposit has been entrusted to us.

To entrust means, “to commit to another with confidence.”

You see, we are not our own. We are the Lord’s and He has committed (with confidence) us back to ourselves for care.

I have been working like crazy trying to prepare to be the best surrogate parent for Nina–because I have been entrusted with her care.

However, sometimes I wonder if my own spirit sometimes feels like an orphaned child.  Is it getting the care it needs or am I tirelessly working to care for others and forgetting that the spirit within me needs rest, tending and focused care?

Perhaps I should work with equal zeal to care for the spirit within me–for it has been entrusted to me by the One Most High–who does top the US and Serbian government.

So, this year, in between seeing us at The Edge parent meetings, you may see me just sitting one my back porch resting and reading–tending the spirit within.

And for the mom who is kissing her daughter today, rest assured.  The Lord can use anything (even the yellow pages) to work out His plans.  Nina will be loved.

Nina--Our new 16 year old "baby"

P.S., If you are a CHS parent, we really need to talk.  This is a new adventure for us.
